It doubles as a hand rail, so there is something firm to pull on when you sit yourself up. The frame is powder coated steel and it holds up to 136kg. Pull the two pins and the rail pivots down beside the bed, which clears the way to get out and makes bed making easier. It can go on either side of the bed and secures to the bed frame with the dual safety strap. The gap between the rails is 7.6cm, and the padded pouch hangs off the rail so a phone, glasses or the remote sit within reach.
