How to Choose the Right Walking Aid — A Clinical Guide
Rollator Walkers (4-wheeled with seat): Best for community access, shopping, and longer distances. The built-in seat allows the user to rest when fatigued. Recommended for users with moderate balance impairment or respiratory conditions requiring frequent rest breaks.
Indoor Walking Frames: Provide maximum stability for indoor use where space allows. Suitable for post-operative recovery, significant balance impairment, or users who need to bear weight through the upper limbs. No wheels — slower but very stable.
Forearm / Elbow Walkers: Combine frame stability with partial forearm support. Suitable for users with wrist weakness, arthritis, or neurological conditions. Reduces wrist strain compared to standard frames.
Walking Sticks & Quad Sticks: Appropriate for mild balance impairment or partial weight bearing. Quad sticks offer a broader base of support than standard sticks. Our pharmacist reviews the clinical picture — medication lists often affect fall risk in ways that change walking aid selection.
Crutches (Elbow/Axillary): Typically prescribed post-injury or post-surgery for partial or non-weight-bearing requirements.

Can I get a walking aid funded through NDIS?
Yes. Walking aids including rollators, walking frames, forearm walkers, and walking sticks are funded under NDIS Assistive Technology (Support Category 05) where they meet the "reasonable and necessary" criteria. Our pharmacist reviews your functional needs and provides an NDIS-compliant quote within 2 hours.
Do I need an OT assessment to get a walking aid through NDIS?
For low-risk walking aids (standard walking sticks, basic walking frames), an AT advisor assessment is generally sufficient. For higher-risk items like rollators or forearm walkers where fall risk or clinical complexity is present, an occupational therapist assessment may be required. Our pharmacist will advise on the right pathway for your participant.
Do you offer free trials of walking aids?
Yes. We offer free in-home trials of rollator walkers and selected walking frames across Wollondilly, Macarthur, Southern Highlands, and greater Sydney. We bring the equipment to your home, assess the environment, and provide trial documentation for your AT report.
