Choosing the Right Continence Products — A Clinical Guide
Absorbency Level: Light absorbency (200–400ml) suits occasional leakage. Moderate (400–800ml) suits more frequent leakage or overnight use. Heavy absorbency (800ml+) suits severe incontinence. Over-absorbent products worn for long periods retain moisture against the skin and increase pressure injury risk.
Pull-Ups vs. Pads: Pull-up style products suit ambulant users who can stand and have some mobility. Pads with fixation pants suit non-ambulant users or those who need carer assistance.
Skin Care & Barrier Creams: Moisture-associated skin damage is a serious complication for continence users. Barrier creams, skin cleansers, and pH-balanced wipes protect the perineal skin and should always be used alongside continence aids.
Bed Protection: Mattress protectors, fitted bed sheets, and disposable underpads protect bedding and reduce laundry burden for overnight incontinence.
NDIS Consumables Funding: Incontinence products are funded under NDIS Consumables (Support Category 03). Consumables can often be purchased without an OT assessment and set up as a recurring monthly delivery invoiced directly to your plan manager.
