How to Choose the Right Wheelchair — A Clinical Guide
Manual vs. Power: Manual wheelchairs suit users with sufficient upper body strength or a carer available to assist. Power wheelchairs are recommended for users with limited arm function, fatigue conditions, or those who need to travel longer distances independently.
Seat Width & Depth: Seat width should be approximately 2–4cm wider than the user’s hips. Seat depth should allow the user to sit fully back with 2–3cm clearance behind the knee. An ill-fitting seat is the most common cause of pressure injury in wheelchair users.
Seat-to-Floor Height: Feet should rest flat on the footrests with hips and knees at approximately 90 degrees. Incorrect seat height affects posture, transfers, and pressure distribution.
Indoor vs. Outdoor Use: Lightweight folding chairs suit car transport and indoor use. Heavier-duty frames handle outdoor terrain better. Consider where the chair will primarily be used before deciding.
