What's the difference between a barrier cream and a skin wash?
A skin wash (or cleansing foam/lotion) is used to clean the skin during incontinence care or personal hygiene routines — often designed to be no-rinse and gentle on the skin's pH. A barrier cream or protection foam is applied after cleansing to form a protective layer on the skin, preventing moisture and body waste from causing breakdown or irritation. Both are often used together as part of a skin care routine.

Prolonged contact with urine or faecal matter can strip the skin's natural protective acid mantle, leading to irritation, redness, and breakdown (incontinence-associated dermatitis).
