Best rollator walkers in Australia

Written by Nadim Assaf, registered pharmacist, Connect Mobility in Picton

There's no single best walker. Let's look at which one fits the way you walk, and where you walk.

Start with where you walk

Most people do well on a 6 or 8 inch aluminium seat walker under $300. Pay more only if it goes in a car boot every day, carries more than 130 kg, or has to roll over gravel and grass.

Here's who each one suits. Every walker on this page is in our rollator walkers range, in stock, and the prices are ours.

If the choice is between the two Vogue walkers, our Vogue Carbon vs Vogue Adventure guide goes through them in detail.

Four things that decide it

Brand matters less than four numbers: wheel size, the walker's own weight, seat height and handle height. Get those right and almost any walker on this page will serve you for years.

Wheel size

WHEEL SIZE, DRAWN TO SCALE 6 inchClassic 6, Mini, Alpha 426 7 inchAlpha 427, Alpha 317 8 inchClassic 8, Deluxe,Alpha 428, Oslo 10 inchNinja Carbon front 11 inchVogue Adventure front 25 mm step cracked path Bigger wheels roll over cracks and small steps. Smaller wheels turn tighter indoors and weigh less.

A 6 inch wheel is fine indoors and in a shopping centre. On a Picton footpath, where tree roots lift the slabs, a 6 inch wheel catches and the walker stops dead. An 8 inch wheel rolls over most of that. The 10 and 11 inch front wheels on the Ninja Carbon and Vogue Adventure handle gravel driveways and grass.

Bigger wheels add weight and need more room to turn. The Classic 6 weighs 6 kg and the Classic 8 weighs 7 kg. The Vogue Adventure, with its big wheels and 200 kg frame, weighs 10 kg.

The walker's own weight

If the walker goes in and out of a car boot, every kilogram counts. The Able Life Space Saver is 3.4 kg and folds to the width of a hand.

The Vogue Carbon Fibre is 5.9 kg. The Classic 6 is 6 kg. The Genesis HD is 11.3 kg. That's fine if it lives at home and hard work if it doesn't.

Seat height

You should be able to sit on the walker with your feet flat and stand up again without a struggle. Seat heights in our range run from 430 mm on the Flex to 620 mm on the Vogue Forearm and the Ninja Carbon Tall. If you're under 160 cm, look at the Aspire Mini (485 mm) or the Flex. If you're tall, the Classic 8 (580 mm) or the Oslo (585 mm).

Handle height

Stand up straight in your usual shoes with your arms hanging loose. The handle should sit at the crease of your wrist. Set it too low and you stoop. Too high and your shoulders hunch.

Aspire's manual says both handles must be at the same height. It also suggests having a health professional check the setting.

Every walker here adjusts, but the ranges differ. The Flex with 6 inch wheels goes as low as 730 mm. The Vogue Forearm goes up to 1,170 mm because you rest your forearms on it, not your hands.

The Territory Walker ($199.95), Aspire Tri Wheel ($229), Meal Tray Walker ($249) and Alpha 317 three wheeler ($298.95) are also in the range. We left them out of the table because each is a special case. The Tri Wheel and Alpha 317 have no seat and turn on a coin. The Meal Tray is for carrying a plate across the kitchen.

Three wheels or four

A three wheeler like the Aspire Tri Wheel (5.5 kg) or the Alpha 317 (about 5 kg) is lighter. It also turns tighter in a small kitchen. You give up stability. There's no seat, and it can tip if you lean on one handle to reach for something.

If you need to sit down on the way to the letterbox, you need four wheels. That's most of the people we see.

Using it safely

Aspire's manual puts it plainly. Lock both brakes before you sit, and listen for the click. Never let someone push you along while you're sitting on it, and don't stand on it.

Keep the walker close to your body as you walk, with your hips between the back wheels. Pushing it out in front with straight arms makes you stoop, and on a slope it can run away from you. If your daily route has kerbs or steep driveways, tell your OT before you choose. That's where the falls happen.

If you fall more than once with it, or your OT hasn't seen you use it, book a walking assessment. A walker that doesn't fit can cause the fall it was meant to prevent.

NDIS and DVA

Every walker on this page costs under $1,500, so the NDIS treats it as low cost assistive technology. No quote, no report. If you have consumables or low cost AT in your plan, you can buy it.

If the NDIA manages your plan you need a registered provider, which we are. Our NDIS walking aids guide covers the paperwork.

The Max Mobility Alpha 317, 426, 427 and 428 are DVA approved. If you hold a Gold Card or a White Card for a relevant condition, an OT can prescribe one through the Rehabilitation Appliances Program.

Looking after it

From Aspire's user manual

Check the brakes every week. Over time the rear wheels wear and the brakes loosen. The cable has an adjustment nut to take up the slack.

Check the wheels and castors for loose nuts and bolts weekly, and the hand grips, frame and folding hinge for cracks every few months.

Once a year, take it to an authorised repairer for a full check and service. Aidacare's warranty is 12 months and does not cover wear and tear or a walker that's been modified.

Questions we get

Walker, rollator or seat walker?

They're the same thing with four wheels, a seat and brakes. Rollator is the American word. A walking frame is the one with no wheels, or two small front wheels, that you lift and place.

Can I take it on the plane?

Yes, as mobility equipment. The side folding ones (Oslo, Alpha 438) and the Space Saver take up the least room in a car or an overhead locker. Tell the airline when you book.

Will it go through my front door?

The Oslo is 540 mm wide, the Flex 570 mm, the Territory 610 mm and the Vogue Adventure 695 mm. Measure the narrowest doorway, usually the bathroom, before you choose.

How long do they last?

The aluminium frames last for many years. Hand grips, brake cables and the seat bag wear first, and we stock replacements for the Max Mobility and Stander walkers.

Try two at home

Tell Nadim your height, your weight and where you'll walk. He'll bring two walkers to your home anywhere in Greater Sydney, Macarthur, Wollondilly or the Southern Highlands, free. Or come into the Picton showroom.
