Most Pathrider 140 XL reviews online are rewritten brochures. This is not one of them. We sell this scooter, we trial it in people's driveways across Macarthur every month, and we hear about it again when it comes back for servicing. So here is the review we would want if it were our own money: what the 140 XL is genuinely excellent at, what it is bad at, and the two kinds of buyer who should not choose it.

The numbers that matter, and why

Tyres	33 cm pneumatic	Air-filled tyres this size roll over cracked footpaths, kerb ramps, grass and gravel that stop smaller solid tyres dead.
Top speed	10 km/h	The legal maximum for footpath use in NSW. Brisk walking pace is 6, so this is quick.
Turning radius	210.8 cm	The honest downside. This is a big machine that turns like one. More below.
Brakes	Sealed hydraulic	Confident, progressive stopping with a heavier rider aboard, on the hills this region is full of.

Add the standard kit most brands charge extra for: full lighting with indicators, rearview mirror, front shield, pillow-top high-back seat, and a wraparound tiller you can drive with either hand or both.

What it is brilliant at

Distance and terrain. This is the scooter for people whose independence means kilometres: the trip into Picton village and back plus errands, the lap of the lake, the caravan park in summer. Full suspension and big pneumatic tyres mean the ride stays comfortable when the surface stops being polite, and comfort is not a luxury when your spine is the suspension backup.

Larger riders, properly. Plenty of scooters claim high capacity while feeling flimsy at the top of it. The 140 XL is engineered around its rating: frame, brakes and motor all sized for it. If you are 120kg to 180kg, this scooter treats you the way a 70kg rider gets treated on a small one.

Hills. Wollondilly and the Southern Highlands are not flat. The 24V drivetrain holds speed uphill where budget scooters wheeze, and the hydraulic brakes control the descent. This matters more than any showroom feature the day you meet a steep driveway.

What it is bad at, honestly

It does not fold, and it does not do car boots. The 140 XL disassembles for transport of an unoccupied scooter with tie-down points, but nobody is casually lifting it into a hatchback. If car transport is weekly, you want the Go Go Carbon folding scooter instead, and we say that in the first minute of trials.

Tight indoor spaces defeat it. A 210cm turning circle is a wide arc. Shopping centre aisles are fine; small shop doorways, narrow home hallways and crowded cafes are not its habitat. People who mostly ride indoors should look at compact 3-wheel options.

Pneumatic tyres need air. The price of the magic-carpet ride is checking pressures like a bicycle, every few weeks. We check them at every service, but between services that is on you or your family.

Pathrider 140 XL vs 130 XL: the family argument

The obvious sibling question. The 130 XL is a step down in size and capacity (and around $600 less); the 140 XL buys you the bigger tyres, higher capacity and the extra stability at pace. Our counter rule: under 110kg rider weight and mostly smooth surfaces, the 130 XL is honestly enough. Over that, or off the smooth stuff, the 140 XL stops being an upgrade and becomes the correct tool. A driveway trial settles it in ten minutes.

Funding and the sensible way to buy one

At $5,999 the 140 XL sits in NDIS mid cost assistive technology ($1,500 to $15,000), which means written advice from an OT or AT advisor rather than a full assessment report, and we quote the same day the advice lands. Do I need a licence to ride it in NSW?

No licence or registration for a mobility scooter used on footpaths at up to 10 km/h in NSW. You must give way to pedestrians, and we strongly recommend the flag and lights on for visibility, which is why the lighting package matters.

What does servicing cost and how often?

An annual service covering batteries, brakes, tyres and connections keeps it reliable and keeps warranty conversations simple. Batteries are the main consumable over the years. Buy from a local supplier who services what they sell; a scooter freighted from an interstate website has no one to call when it stops.

What is in the box?
