What to Expect from a Free NDIS Mobility Scooter Trial in NSW (And Why It Matters)

Written by Nadim Assaf, Registered Pharmacist & CEO — Connect Mobility. NDIS Provider #4050 144 759.

Getting a mobility scooter through the NDIS is not just about paperwork. The model you choose has to actually work in your life — on your driveway, through your garden path, in the car park at your local shops, and in the boot of your car. Choosing the wrong one doesn’t just waste your NDIS funding; it can result in a rejected claim, an unusable scooter, and months of delays.

This guide explains exactly what a good mobility scooter trial involves, what you should be testing, how your OT uses the trial in their AT report, and how Connect Mobility’s free in-home trial service works across Sydney, Wollondilly, and the Illawarra.

In This Guide

  1. Why trialling a scooter before funding is so important
  2. What a good mobility scooter trial involves
  3. The trial checklist — what you should test
  4. The OT’s role in a trial
  5. How Connect Mobility’s free trial works
  6. What happens after the trial

1. Why Trialling Before Funding Is So Important

Mobility scooters are not small purchases. They are considered assistive technology under the NDIS, meaning they typically sit in the Capital Supports budget and require an OT assessment to justify them as reasonable and necessary. For most models, you’re looking at $2,000–$8,000 of NDIS funding. That money is committed once the order is placed.

What Goes Wrong Without a Trial

Wrong turning radius
The scooter can’t turn in your hallway, kitchen, or local supermarket. You can’t return it once funded.
Car boot mismatch
The scooter is too heavy to lift into your car, or too wide for the boot. Now you need a hoist — another NDIS claim.
Insufficient range
You chose a compact model with a 15km range. Your weekly shops are 8km away. The battery runs flat before you get home.
Can’t negotiate your kerbs
The wheels are too small for the kerbs between your driveway and the footpath. The scooter is effectively a prisoner in your garage.
Rejected NDIS claim
The NDIA requires evidence the chosen model is the right fit. Without trial documentation, the claim lacks clinical support and may be rejected.
Wasted OT time
Your OT writes an AT report for a product that turns out to be unsuitable. The report has to be rewritten, adding weeks and cost to your support budget.

2. What a Good Mobility Scooter Trial Involves

When an OT prescribes a mobility scooter, they consider the level of physical function, cognitive requirements such as safely following road signals and safety awareness, the home environment including ramps and inside accessibility, and the types of terrain the participant needs to navigate. A proper trial tests all of this in real conditions.

The 6 Parts of a Complete Scooter Trial

🏠
Home environment assessment
We assess your entry points, doorway widths, driveway surface, and internal circulation space. Can you charge the scooter indoors? Is there a ramp or a step? Where will it be stored?
🔄
Turning radius test
We test whether the scooter can make the turns you actually need to make — out of your garage, around your kitchen bench, through your local supermarket aisle. 3-wheel and 4-wheel scooters have very different turning circles.
🚗
Car boot and transport test
We physically test whether the scooter disassembles and fits in your actual vehicle. We check whether you (or your carer) can lift the heaviest component. Many scooters marketed as “portable” have heaviest components exceeding 20kg.
🚊
Outdoor terrain test
We test on the actual footpaths, driveways, and surfaces you use. We check kerb clearance, grass performance (if relevant), and how the scooter handles inclines around your property and local area.
🔋
Battery range discussion
We discuss your typical routes — the distance to your local shops, your medical appointments, your preferred walking paths — and match the battery range specification to your real-world use. Range claims are typically at flat speed on smooth surfaces. We give you realistic expectations.
👥
Fit and comfort assessment
We check seat height, armrest width, tiller reach, and weight capacity. A scooter that’s too narrow or too cramped will be abandoned within weeks. Our pharmacist also checks for any medication or medical conditions that affect your ability to safely operate the controls.

3. The Trial Checklist — What You Should Test

Use this checklist during your scooter trial. Share it with your OT — it feeds directly into the evidence base for your AT report.

NDIS Mobility Scooter Trial Checklist

Can I mount and dismount safely? Without assistance if relevant to my goals.
Can I reach and operate the tiller comfortably? Without straining my shoulders or wrists.
Does it fit through my front door/garage entry? Check width clearance with space to manoeuvre.
Can it navigate my kerbs/driveway lip? Test at the actual kerb, not flat pavement.
Does it fit in (or on) my car? Test actual disassembly and boot loading or ramp/hoist access.
Is the seat comfortable for my typical session length? Sit for 20+ minutes if possible.
Can I turn around in a typical retail aisle? Simulate a tight space and test the turning circle.
Does the weight capacity meet my needs? With any bags or accessories attached.
Can I operate the charging port independently? Or will I need carer assistance each night?
Does the battery range suit my typical outings? Discuss your usual routes and distances with the pharmacist.

Tip: Ask for a written trial summary from your provider. This document becomes evidence for your OT’s AT report and strengthens your NDIS application considerably.

4. The OT’s Role in a Scooter Trial

An OT-led scooter assessment typically involves a site visit to the equipment supplier or provider for trial of multiple options, then a home trial to check access — does it fit through doorways, is there adequate circulation space? For clients who need their scooter and vehicle to be compatible, the OT will also trial the proposed scooter in the vehicle setup.

What the OT Needs from Your Trial

Evidence the model fits your environment
Doorway clearances, driveway surface, storage location, kerb heights tested and documented.
Confirmation of safe operation
The participant safely mounted, drove, and dismounted the specific model being recommended.
Written supplier trial summary
A written record from the NDIS provider confirming which model was trialled, what was tested, and the outcome. This feeds directly into the AT report.
Product specification and quote alignment
The product recommended in the AT report must exactly match the model in the supplier’s quote. Any mismatch will delay approval.

Important: The NDIS assessment and approval process can take anywhere from 1 month to over a year, depending on the complexity of the application. A well-documented trial with a detailed written summary is one of the strongest things you can do to speed up approval and reduce the risk of rejection.

5. How Connect Mobility’s Free Trial Works

We come to you. You test in your actual environment. Our pharmacist is present throughout.

Most suppliers invite you to their showroom. That tells you how a scooter performs on flat showroom tiles — not on your driveway, not through your gate, not in your car boot. Connect Mobility brings the scooter to your home so you’re testing in real conditions from the first minute.
